Care home life can become a little repetitive, so it’s always nice to have outings and activities planned for your residents to look forward to. A lot of people living in care homes miss being able to get out and do different things, so planning some days out that are suitable for everyone can be a great way to keep spirits high and make care home life more enjoyable.

1. Take a trip to the cinema

There’s nothing like the smell of freshly popped popcorn to bring back your residents’ youth. The chances are that your residents love watching movies, or did when they were younger, so why not bring back special memories for them by planning a trip to the cinema? See if there’s a cinema in the area that shows old movies - the kinds of movies that your residents would have loved in their youth. In Tiverton there’s the Tivoli Cinema, for instance, that shows a range of independent films, including showings of older movies.

2. Go to the beach

What could be better than the sound of waves crashing on the shore and the smell of salty sea air? For residents who have spent their lives living by the sea, the beach has most probably become an important part of who they are. Even for those residents who come from the city, they most probably have happy memories of summer holidays spent at the seaside, so a trip to the beach would be a welcome idea. Whether you’re based in Devon or Cornwall, there are hundreds of beautiful beaches to choose from, perfect for taking your residents to for a day trip.

3. Visit the zoo

How about taking a trip to the zoo - who doesn’t love animals? A day trip to your local zoo could be a fantastic way to get your residents out and about. There’s something incredibly exciting about the zoo - the sounds, the smells, everything about visiting is exciting, especially when you’re going to one of the country’s best zoos, such as Paignton Zoo, for instance. To make the trip extra special, visit during the spring when there are lots of cute, baby animals on display.

4. Take a drive

How about instead of planning the day out in detail, you simply take a drive? Hire a mini bus, pack your residents onto it, and head off on a mini adventure. See where the road takes you - maybe you’ll end up in the countryside or perhaps you’ll find your way to a pretty tea shop, it doesn’t matter where you end up, just as long as your residents enjoy the journey.

5. Pack a picnic

Remind your residents of their youth with a picnic at a local park. Plan out a delicious picnic packed full of all of your residents’ favourite foods. Perhaps you could ask each resident to tell you their favourite picnic food so that you can get it in for them? Picnics can be great fun and a perfect way to keep your residents entertained for the day. To make the picnic more memorable, why not invite the families of your residents along?

6. Take a walk down memory lane

Each resident will have their own special memories, from days at the beach with their partner to having coffee in cafes with their children. So why not ask each resident where their most special place is, and then visit each of these places while on different outings? Surely there’s no better day out than a walk down memory lane?
