Dementia Awareness is Brought to CLH

This month (July 2018) we had a dementia friends information session brought to us by Gina Awad*, founder of the Exeter Dementia Action Alliance whose slogan is 'Working towards a dementia-friendly city'.

Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer's Society initiative.  It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition and each local area can participate to change people's perceptions of dementia.

The session was hosted in our showroom as we have recently had delivered a lot of new chairs so the opportunity to try them out in a relaxed setting was only too welcome.  In the Dementia Friends session we learnt all about the Five Key Messages which are:

  1. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing
  2. Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain
  3. Dementia is not just about losing your memory - it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks
  4. It's possible to live well with dementia
  5. There's more to a person than the dementia

Gina also went over some of the work she and the EDAA are doing in Exeter, the capital city of Devon. Thus encouraging organisations such as CLH to take small practical action to help people living with dementia and their families.

Not only was the knowledge imparted insightful and very informative to help increase our awareness of dementia but it also means we can proudly show the Dementia Friends logo on our website, so many thanks for coming Gina Awad and helping us to become Dementia Friends!

Now that CLH is part of the UK's biggest ever initiative to change the way people think, act and talk about dementia, we did the obvious thing and took a photo to celebrate that 'We are Dementia Friends'
